June Karen Porter, 92, of Georgetown, TX, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at The Wesleyan at Scenic Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Georgetown.

June was born on a family farm just north of Garner, Iowa in 1923, the third child of Danish immigrant parents, Christian and Mary (Jensen) Rasmussen.

She loved growing up on the family farm with 2 brothers and 1 sister. After being educated for 4 years in a one room school house, she attended Public School and Waldorf College in Forest City, IA. She worked as a secretary for one year at Iowa State University.

She then married her high school sweetheart, Wayne Porter, in December of 1943, just after he completed desert maneuvers in Yuma, Arizona. When Wayne shipped out over seas in the spring of 1944, June returned to the family farm. They lived an Army life (with 2 small daughters) through World War II and the Korean Conflict, until Wayne left military service in 1952. They added 3 sons to their family and enjoyed several career moves with the Veterans Administration. June continued her career in the secretarial field, primarily in medical environments, with the VA. She was also a professional typist, hired to type theses for graduate students. For her entire life, June was always a voracious reader, and liked nothing better than a good game of bridge with friends.

June is survived by daughter Judy (Jeff) Willett of Georgetown, TX; sons: Scott (Lisa) Porter of Austin TX, John Porter of Round Rock, TX, and Tom (Betsy) Porter of Danville, IL; sister, Joy Moore of Anaheim Hills, CA; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; daughter, Karen Basinger of Des Moines, IA; and brothers: Robert Rasmussen of CA, and Dwayne Rasmussen of Clear Lake, IA.

There will be a memorial service for June at the First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, TX on September 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Forest City, IA.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a public library of your choice, Wesleyan Hospice or First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, TX.
