Robert served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-25D "Miss Ellen" #41-30039, 500th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Although this bomber was assigned to the 499th Bomber Squadron, it was on temporary loan to the 500th Bomber Squadron for this mission.
He resided in Richmond, Virginia prior to the war.
B-25D #41-30039 took off from Dobodura Airfield on a mission to bomb and strafe Rabaul. While over Rabaul they were hit by an anti-aircraft shell below the bomb bay, causing the phosphorous bombs in the bomb bay to explode, catch fire and smoke. The bomber tried to recover however they crashed & exploded near Malaguna to the west of Rabaul during the war.
Robert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
