Bettye R. Walders, 95, of Amarillo, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2016.

Family services will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Bettye was born Nov. 16, 1920, in Independence, Mo., to William J. and Grace M. Morgan Martin.

Bettye attended Amarillo High School and, after graduation, moved to San Diego, Calif., where she met and married the love of her life, Joseph Jacque “Jack” Walders, on April 17, 1949. On a visit trip back to Amarillo, Jack fell in love with the Texas Panhandle, and soon after they moved back to Amarillo and made this their permanent residence.

Bettye loved reading, studying American history, gardening and, above all else, traveling. She spent all her summer months at their family ranch outside Crested Butte, Colo., until her declining health prevented her from traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Keith G. Martin.

Survivors include her son, Richard J. Walders and wife Judy of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Kim D. Hill and husband David; a great-granddaughter, Regan C. Hill; and a great-grandson, Mason D. Hill, all of Castle Rock, CO; and a very dear family friend, Carolyn Gonzales.

The family suggests memorials be to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.
