He was united in marriage to Frances Newcomer Sept 4, 1856 and to this union were born nine children, two of whom, William H and John F preceded him to the spirit world.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, Frances, and daughters, Mrs Mary E Lehman of Teegarden, Ind, Mrs Tillie Miller of Salinda, Colo, and Mrs Clara Link of Mt Vernon, SD, and sons, Uriah C of Santiago, Cal, Samuel H of South Bend, Ind, Jesse N of Sturgis, Mich, and Lieut Hugh T of Camp Gordon, Georgia; twenty-two grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, also one brother Isaac Berkey of Ohio, and a host of other relatives and friends.
He with his family moved to Elkhart county, Indiana, in October, 1864, where he lived on his farm one and one-half miles north of Wakarusa until 1891, when he moved to their present home in town.
Father Berkey united with the Methodist Episcopal church when thirty years of age and lived a devoted and exemplary Christian life, being loyal to his church, ever ready to make any sacrifice for the upbuilding of the Kingdom and leading souls to a higher life; his pleasant smile and kind words will be remembered as characteristics of his life.
His funeral was held from the Methodist church Monday, Sept 9, 1918 at 10 o'clock, am, Rev Morgan officiating, and burial at Elkhart, Ind.
