Opal Evelyn Austin, 88, of St. Elmo, formerly of Vandalia, died at 11:10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Fayette County Hospital.

No visitation or funeral services have been requested. Burial will be in Griffith Cemetery, rural Fayette County near Brownstown, at a later date. Memorials: Friendship Manor of St. Elmo or donor's choice.

Mrs. Austin was born on March 6, 1917, in rural Effingham County, the daughter of Henry A. and Rachel F. Ooton-Willis.

She was employed by Dr. Judson Phillips as a nursing assistant in his St. Elmo nursing home for a number of years. She also later worked as a restaurant waitress for a number of years, last working in Granite City.

She is survived by sons, Henry Leonard Ledbetter, and Jim Leroy and his wife Lora Lee Ledbetter, all of St. Elmo; a stepson, Joseph Allen and his wife Tracy Ledbetter of Altamont; stepdaughters, Paula Rae and her husband Joe Hatfill, Marlena and her husband Larry Huddlestun, and Jodi Ann and her husband Tom Graumenz, all of St. Elmo; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; sons, Andrew Wilson Webb Ledbetter, Floyd Eugene Ledbetter Jr., Robert Allen Ledbetter and Franklin Paul Ledbetter; a daughter, Barbara June James; six brothers; five sisters; and four grandchildren.
