2nd President of Mexico. A member of Mexico's Liberal Party, he served as president from 1 April 1829 to 17 December 1829. Prior to becoming president, he worked for his father's freight business and travelled the country. As he grew older, he became opposed to the Spanish colonial government. In 1810 he joined in the early revolt against Spain. He then joined rebel forces fighting for independence for the next several years. He eventually became a revolutionary general and was widely admired. He was then elected president of the relatively new government. His mandate was short lived and he was deposed in a rebellion under Vice-President Anastasio Bustamante on 4 December 1829. He fled to the south where war erupted again. He was captured a year later, court-martialed and then executed by the government. He is best remembered for promoting equal civil rights for all Mexican citizens.
