daughter of David Lowry and Lizzie Browden. married to Brian Huger Greene, SR.

On June 28.1902, a baby daughter was born in the Madisonville, Tennessee home of David Erskine Lowry and Lizzie Browder Lowry, and as this child grew in this Christian home, she took her educational advantages seriously in Madisonville, and later at Maryville College, graduating with a major in mathematics, in 1921. She worked in her father's hardware store until a young preacher, the Reverend Brian H. Greene came to Madisonville as pastor of Madisonville, Vonore, and Oakland Methodist Churches in the early 1930's. Brian and Blanche were married on September 14, 1933. They served the purposes of God s Kingdom with fidelity at South Pittsburg from 1935 till 1940 in Holston Conference; Sweetwater, 1940-1946; LaFollette. 1946-1950; First Church, Greeneville, 1950-I956; and Loudon, 1956-1960. It was while they were serving the Sweetwater Methodist Church that this writer came for evangelistic services there and caught something of the spirit and tone of this Christian family of parents and two sons: Brian H. Greene. Jr. and David L. Greene. Blanche was a dedicated home-maker and mother in the parsonage, whose example made an indelible impression upon her sons, but she was a quiet and charming partner in church life and program. Her influence upon her husband is illustrated as they sat in a session of the Annual Conference at Church St. Church in Knoxville. A fiery debate had taken place on the floor of the Conference, involving the possibility of the union of Hiwassee Junior College with Tennessee Wesleyan College. The young minister behind them (with his fiancée) said out loud that it looked like a reasonable step. Brian Greene, a good friend, turned around and commented that his friend didn't understand the issues, nor the peculiar nature of service rendered by Hiwassee, or he wouldn't have said what he did. Blanche soothed her husband's remonstrance, amicably. The Morristown College Choir soon were singing "My Lord, What a Morning!" As laughter broke the spell of friction.

After Brian senior's death in 1960, Blanche served as "dorm-mother" at Tennessee Wesleyan and later at Hiwassee College. Even later, she herself retired to her home in Madisonville. An illness of nearly four months, took her to Blount Memorial Hospital, in Maryville where she died on September 21, I984. While in the hospital, for two weeks, it was typical of her to know the nurses who ministered to her by name, and to learn of their families by name. "She put great stock in the family and was always tracing down distant relatives," commented a son. Further, she had come to know the children of the Madisonville United Methodist Church, including their birthdays and important events in their lives.

The Memorial Service for Blanche took place at the United Methodist Church in Madisonville on September 23. 1984, with Dr. Clarence McCall. the Reverend Sam Haun of the Presbyterian Church, and her pastor. Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. Burial took place at Grandview Cemetery, Maryville.

In addition to Brian, Jr. and his lovely wife, Carolyn (married by the writer at Centenary Church, Chattanooga), and another son, David, Blanche is survived by a sister, Mrs. Marie Holt of Maryville.
