Gertrude Marie Stueve, daughter of August and Elizabeth (Mienor) Stueve, was born December 29, 1895 in Carroll, Iowa. She moved to Hallock, Minnesota as a young girl and attended school there. Her mother passed away when she was only 16 years old. Gertrude remained at home to assist with the younger children and housework. Gertrude later went to live with her aunt’s family near Dundee, Minnesota, and this is where she met Louie Becker. The couple was married January 15, 1917 in Dumont, Minnesota. They lived on a farm in Southbrook Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. To this union were born seven children. Louie passed away in September of 1946. Gertrude remained on the farm with her young family. Gertrude took on the role of a gentle lady patriarch guiding her family into maturity with one hand in God’s and one in theirs. She believed “A family who prays together stays together”. Gertrude moved to Heron Lake in 1953 where she created a “Grandmother’s Haven” for her children and grandchildren. She was always a source or love, happiness and contentment. She was always there for everyone. After thirty years, ill health forced her to move to the Sogge Home in Windom, then later to the Lakeview Home in Heron Lake to be close to her family.

Gertrude was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake and was a member of the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women and the women’s Catholic Order of Foresters.
