Maggie McDonald Ellison, 77, departed this life on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at Palmetto Health Tuomey, after a brief illness. Born on Dec. 15, 1938, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Steward Sr. and Maggie Wilson McDonald Sr. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Freddie Ellison on Nov. 25, 1961.

She was educated in the public schools of South Carolina and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. She continued her education and earned a bachelor of science degree from Morris College in 1960; a master's degree from Atlanta University in 1971; and education specialist certification from University of South Carolina in 1985.

Upon completing her education, she worked in the public schools of Clarendon and Sumter counties, where she retired in 1992 after teaching mathematics for 30 years at Sumter High School. Ms. Ellison had a true passion for teaching. Her philosophy of teaching illustrated her belief that teaching allowed her to help students develop to his or her fullest potential.

She was a faithful member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she participated in the Young Women's Association, Education Ministry and Missionary Board. She was an active member of the Sumter community and served on several committees throughout the years.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Judy Ellison Houston of Hopkins and Carla Faye Ellison of Myrtle Beach; one granddaughter, Keneithra Houston of Sumter; three sisters, Geneva Montgomery and Sarah McFadden, both of Sumter, and Sadie Bell Marshall of Hyattsville, Maryland; one brother, Steward McDonald of Fayetteville, North Carolina; two nieces; five nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 805 S. Harvin St., Sumter, with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, eulogist.

Burial: Hillside Memorial Park, 3001 Cain's Mill Road, Sumter.

Services directed by the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
