“Big Daddy”

Steve Garrison was born November 3, 1935 in Sweetwater, Texas and passed away August 26, 2016 in Sherman, Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother Mamie Whiteside and father, famous Hollywood bootmaker to the stars, Charlie Garrison. Brothers, Clarence Garrison, Gary White, Billy McClendon and sister Dinkie Robertson. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Shirley Garrison, his number one daughter Kirsten Garrison and his granddaughter and BEST FRIEND Krystyl Garrison of Sherman, Texas. His sister, Wanda Lewis of Keller, Texas and Special cousin Jayne Maxey of Burleson, Texas, lifelong best friend and compadre Bobby Gaynor of Double Oak, Texas and several nieces, nephews, as well as many family, friends and his two beloved dogs Ginger and Dusty.

Steve graduated from Hico High School in Hico, Texas in 1953. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from East Texas State University and served in the United States Marine Corp. Steve was a manager at Texas Instruments for thirty two years, he loved his job and his employees. After retiring, he owned, trained and raced quarter horses in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana under the KK racing brand, named after his daughter and granddaughter. His horses always raced wearing hot pink and purple racing silks his granddaughter’s favorite colors she chose as a little girl. In December 2007, Steve accomplished a life-long dream of winning The Texas Classic Futurity and Derby with a One Million Dollar purse.

Steve and his wife Shirley are members of Grace United Methodist Church. Steve was an avid hunter, fisherman and had learned the fine craft of custom boot making from his father Charlie Garrison and brother Clarence Garrison, carrying on a Garrison family tradition. Steve was a man who was larger than life and loved his three girls more than anything in this world. He was known as “Big Daddy” to everyone and wore his signature bandana to coordinate with his outfit, every single day.

Big Daddy was a strong and courageous man, who his granddaughter loved with all her heart, he was her one and only hero. He was also loving and caring to those who needed a hand and a great provider to his family, no matter what the circumstances. He will be immensely missed.

The family requests all family, friends and co-workers come together for a celebration of life on Saturday, September 10th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Finley Cultural Center located at 500 North Rusk, Sherman, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to ARF House Sherman or the American Heart Association.
