Son of Decatur Noonan Butler and Martha Ann Wilkinson, he married Emily Catherine Griffin on 15 November 1864. She is buried in Butler-Short Cemetery. He then married Mary Elizabeth Tarver.

From Florida girl:

He served in the Civil War as a Private with Co. K, 44th Mississippi Regiment, Blythe's Brigade, Hood's Corp. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh and the Atlanta Campaign. In total he was wounded four times, two severely.

While on furlough and on crutches he married Emily Catherine Griffin on November 15, 1864. She passed on September 1, 1866. They had one child together, Martha Emily Butler born on November 16, 1865.

He married a second time to Mary Elizabeth Tarver on December 23, 1868.
