John (Johnny) Van Gundy, formerly of Elk River, passed away Oct. 15, 2011, at his home in Aberdeen, Wash., of diabetic complications.

Johnny was born March 14, 1961, in Kellogg, Idaho, to Ruby and Lloyd Van Gundy. He attended Elk River Public School, graduating in 1980. From there Johnny joined the U. S. Navy. He was a submariner stationed out of Groton, Conn. Over the years John was also employed at Western Village in Sparks, Nev., and worked for a time at Northwoods Nursery and the University of Idaho in the facilities maintenance department.

Johnny loved football, (Go Cowboys), baseball, dirt bikes, conversation, history, geology, horticulture, and was an avid reader. He was never without a dog by his side. He despised organized religion, hypocrisy, the justice system and the medical establishment. Although he may have been willing to hear out an opposing argument, it was probably wise to agree to disagree because Johnny remained, above all, a man of his convictions.

Johnny is survived by his brothers, James and Angie Hall of Ocean Shores, Wash., and David Erwin; his stepfather, Toby Hall of Aberdeen, Wash., along with his mom, Linda and Robert Smith of Elk River. He also leaves behind three nieces and numerous friends in north Idaho who will miss him around the campfire. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby; and his brother, Daniel.

A graveside service has already taken place at the Three Pines Cemetery in Elk River.
