Born in Lazare, Texas, he was the son of Clayton and Sadie (Alexander) Coker. He grew up in Thackerville. He joined the Navy in December of 1945 and went through boot camp in San Diego. He was assigned to the cruiser USS Fall River. The USS Fall River was the flagship for the underwater atomic bomb testing at Bikini Island Atoll. After being discharged from the Navy he moved to Oklahoma City and married Mary E. Deibel. In the early years of their marriage, he worked in the oilfield industry. A few years later he took a position as warehouse manager for Osborne Produce, where he worked for 18 years. In 1982, the couple relocated to near Calvin, where they farmed and ranched until 2003 when they retired to McAlester. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and most of all spending time with his family. He died of cancer at his home in McAlester at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry and sister Sarah Anna Ruth.
