John E. Tillett, merchant, died at the family home Monday of cancer of the stomach. John Edward Tillett was born in Jasper Co., Ind., Mar. 10, 1857, a son of John and Elizabeth Tillett, 4th of 9 children. On Jan. 5, 1881, he married Minnie Cunningham. Three daughters were born to them, Pearl, Emma & Vergie. In 1888, he moved to Francesville and engaged in the grocery business with James N. Hayworth. Two years later he entered the butcher business. In 1892, he traded for the Dr. D. W. Strouse drug store and continued till death. His mother died in 1893, but his father, aged 84, still lives, also brothers and sisters; James M. Tillett of Peru, C. F. Tillett, Mrs. Stephen Freeman, Mrs. Mary Parker, Mrs. Paris Robinson of Gillam Twp., Mrs. Thomas Randall of Hope, Kansas, and Dr. J. A. Tillett of Whitefish, Mont. Services at the residence with Rev. Casper Garrigues and J. J. Claypool. Burial in the cemetery east of town.
