Mrs. Lucy Polite Murray - SAVANNAH - Mrs. Lucy Polite Murray entered into eternal rest on July 17, 2016, while under the compassionate care of Hospice Savannah, surrounded by family and friends. She was born January 15, 1932 in Savannah, GA to Harold and Hazel Walker Polite. She was the oldest of two children. Her education began in Savannah Public Schools at Paulsen Elementary and Cuyler Junior High. She also attended Mather Academy for Girls in Beaufort, S.C. and later graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1950. She was a member of the (TAGS) Teenage Girls Society. In 1967, she became the first, full-time, female, uniformed letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Savannah, Georgia; where she retired as Supervisor of Mail Processing. In 1991, she received an Associate Degree from Savannah Technical College in Fashion Design. In 1997, she became the first student to graduate Magna Cum Laude at the age of 65 from Savannah State University with a B.S. degree in Social Work. Lucy joined Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church; where she was an active parishioner and member of the bereavement committee until her illness interrupted her stewardship. Lucy enjoyed people and looked forward to the fellowship at the Cloverdale Community Center and was an avid Golden State Warriors basketball fan. Preceding her in death were her loving parents; beloved husband, James Murray; two daughters, Hazel and Denise; and son, Preston. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and dedicated daughter, Gretchen Murray (James) Franklin; stepdaughter, Gloria Murray McNair, Trenton, NJ; her only sister, Harriett Polite Marion; special friend, William Mosley; grandchildren: Malcolm (Kim) Thomas; Markell (Tawana) Thomas; Angel Devone of Stone Mountain, GA; Garren (Chanel) Williams of Conyers, GA; and Madrid Thomas of Atlanta, GA; five great-grandchildren; godmother, Mary Bogan (Henry) Ward; godsister, Hazel Bargeron Walden; godson, Eugene (Tangela) Broomfield of Sunrise, FL, a host of caring cousins and friends. Funeral Services for Mrs. Lucy Polite Murray will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2016 at Resurrection Of Our Lord Catholic Church, 112 Fell St., Father Robert E. Chaney, Officiating. Interment - Laurel Grove Cemetery.
