William Black was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1727. His father was a public officer and possessed an independent fortune. William enjoyed following the hounds until he was about 21 years old and then he became a travelling salesman in the linen and drapery business. It was during a selling trip to Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England that he met Elizabeth Stocks and they married there about 1758. She was born in Huddersfield about 1739.

They had the following children, all of whom were born in Huddersfield:

John (1758-1830),
William (1760-1834)
Richard (1764-1834)
Thomas Stocks (1766-1850)
Sarah (1767)

William's mind was drawn to America and the agricultural opportunities offered there so he travelled to Cumberland, NS in 1774 and purchased a property. In the spring of 1775 he chartered the "Jenny" in Hull, England and sailed to Nova Scotia with his family. His wife suffered some injuries while boarding the ship and these were thought to have hastened her death which took place the following year in Amherst, NS. The location of her grave is unknown at this time.

Following her death, William married Elizabeth Abber who was born in 1748. They had the following children:

Elizabeth (1777)
Mary (1778)
Nancy (1779)
Jane (1780)
James Alexander (1790)
Joseph Abber (1791)
George Mason (1793)

Elizabeth died in 1813. Following her death, William purchased a large estate in Dorchester, NB where he lived with his son, Joseph, and he died there in 1820. The location of his grave is unknown at this time.
