Son of Patrick and Mary (Dolan) Flaherty of Corinagh, Drumlish Parish. Pat came to the States before 22 Jun 1861, when, at Great Neck, Long Island NY, during the Civil War, he enlisted in Co D, 42nd NY Infantry. He fought in the battles of Ball's Bluff, Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg on 3 Jul 1863 he received a gunshot wound in the left leg below the knee. Hospitalized for several months at Fort Schuyler NY, where he was visited by his brother-in-law Terence J. Tully and Terence's brother Michael Tully. Pat re-enlisted in March of 1864 and served in Co D, 82nd NY Inf, and Co B, 59th NY Inf.

After the war he enlisted at Philadelphia on 23 Jan 1866, served three years in Co C, 6th US Inf and was discharged 23 Jan 1869 at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, near Muskogee OK. His description at enlistment shows him 5' 1" tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and fair complexion. Apparently never married. He lived with and worked for T. J. Tully at Philadelphia in the 1870's. He died at 729 North Front St., Philadelphia.
