Ruby's parents are Joseph Barlow Forbes and Nancy Mindrel Dayton. She is the youngest of a family of 13.

Ruby married Byron Robert Crosby Jr., January 1, 1914 in Salt Lake City, UT. Byron is the step-son of her older sister, Mary Alice. Ruby and Byron became the parents of two sons, Byron Barlow and Harvey Forbes. Their happiness was short-lived. Byron died in 1918 of pneumonia. He was just 26 years old.

On May 5, 1920, Ruby married James White Sr. His wife had also died in 1918. They became the parents of one daughter, Nancy Ellen.

Ruby died in 1967 at age 73. She buried beside Byron Crosby.
