6th President of Colombia. He served as the President of Colombia from May 23, 1867 to April 1, 1868. Prior to becoming president, he was a general in the Columbian military forces. In 1861 he assumed the presidency of the state of Boyacá. He was elected several times to the Columbian House of Representatives and the Senate. He is best remembered for his key role in constitutional reform. His other domestic accomplishments included creation of the National University of Colombia, The National Archives, and the National Library.
