Haren Johannes Hendrickson spent most of his life farming a 160 acre farm located 1.5 miles north of Slifer, Iowa on the West side of the highway (3/4 mile SW of the Danish cemetery). The postal address was Callender, Iowa 50523. Haren married Louise Edna Marie (Anderson) Hendrickson on May 6 1925 in the Fulton Lutheran Church Moorland, Iowa. Louise and Haren had 4 precious children: the oldest was son Ronald Loyd (12/16/1926-9/6/1930) who died at the age of 3, daughter Marilyn Joyce (Hendrickson) (Heim) Turner(b. 1/4/1929), son Edward Leroy (b. 8/19/1931), and youngest son Warren Lee (9/30/1938 - 10/17/2001). Oldest Grandson Edward Lee Hendrickson Jr. (b. 8/5/1956) remembers walking bean fields for a week every summer in the 60's with his grandparents Haren and Louise. "Grandpa Haren would drive the grandkids into Callendar, Iowa and buy them new straw hats and gloves. Haren would get us up before sunrise, and we would all walk beans till noon, even Grandma Louise would walk with us pulling weeds, then it would be too hot and humid to continue. When I was young, and I could only do 1 bean row at a time, he would pay me $10 which I thought was an amazing amount. Later, when I could handle 4 or 6 rows at a time, he would pay me $50 which was a good amount in the 1960's." Ed Jr remembers that Haren was very hard working, and very quiet and soft spoken. He would watch the news every night, then the weather, and then go upstairs to bed right after the weather, never watching the sports. His farm fields were very neat and clean, his buildings were all painted and the yard was neatly mowed, but the machine shop was another story. It had every part imaginable and was a bit cluttered. In the fall of 1967, when Haren was 63 years old, he had recently underwent surgery at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City and wasn't able to do his field work. All Haren's neighbors, relatives, and friends hauled their combines in and harvested 60 acres of soybeans in 70 minutes. It was quite a site seeing so many combines at one time. Haren passed away 3 years later on 10/22/1970 from stomach cancer, here is

Haren's obituary from the Gowrie News Octboer 28, 1970.
