The only son of Leo J Breunig and Emma P Breunig a school teacher. They lived in the Town of Stratford in Fairfield Ct. attended the Wilcoxson School where his mother taught, Stratford High School. He attended the Genesee Wesleyan College, in upstate NY and later transferred to Roanoke College in Virginia. He was a very popular student.
Lieut. Breunig arrived at Stewart Field and began to settle in, on his 22nd birthday, August 25th the day the field was dedicated.
On the morning of August 28, 1942 Lt. Bruenig was assigned USMA Cadet Richard H. Hauser of the second flying class. They took off from Stewart Field shortly before 10am on a routine training flight when the BT-13A Vultee trainer began to develop engine trouble. Lieut. Bruenig was able to maintain flight and had Cadet Houser bail out. About 4 miles west of the field near Walden he lost control of the plane and it crashed near Meadow View farm. Cadet Houser was taken to Stewart Hospital where he remained with minor injuries for several days. Lieut. Bruenig would become the first fatal casualty at Stewart. A service was held in the newly dedicated Stewart Chapel for Lieut. Breunig and he was later interred in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport Ct.
