Marilyn York Rose
1931 ~ 2016
On August 21, Marilyn joined her beloved Earl forever, passing away peacefully, surrounded by family.
Marilyn was born February 3, 1931 to Fred York and Helene Hansen York at St. Luke's in downtown Boise. She had one older brother, James York. She and her brother grew up in the North End of Boise and she spent most of her life there. The family's first home was on Irene and 21st street, which they later sold to the State for the Governor's Mansion. She attended Lowell Grade School, as did her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchild. Growing up she was a dancer, musician and athlete. She was a star tennis player, winning State Championships.
Marilyn met Earl Rose Jr. at Immanuel Lutheran Church on 7th and Fort. They sang in the choir together and attended Boise High School. Marilyn graduated in 1949. Earl and Marilyn became engaged in 1950, before Earl was shipped out to Hawaii with the naval reserves. He asked Marilyn to join him there and they were married in Honolulu on June 15, 1951.
In 1952, their daughter Susan was born at Tripler Army Hospital. After Earl's tour of duty was done, they all came back to Boise and Mark was born in 1954. Earl III (known as "Tag") was born in 1956 and Jim was born in 1961. About that time, they moved to the Grace Street house.
Marilyn loved being a homemaker and mother, entertaining her family with her particular brand of wacky humor and clever fun.
One of Marilyn's proudest moments was when she went back to Boise State and became a nurse in 1986. She said "In my whole life, I was someone's daughter, someone's sister, someone's wife and someone's mother. This is just for me—I'm a nurse!"
After retirement, Marilyn and Earl spent time on Maui every year. They enjoyed traveling to Denmark and spending time at the cabin at Karney. But most of all, Marilyn loved her family. Christmas was her favorite holiday and it was at that time that her legendary sense of humor showed.
As life moved on, Earl and Marilyn moved into assisted living. Earl passed away in 2012, and Marilyn moved to Grace Assisted Living, where she quickly made friends, again treating them to her crazy sense of fun.
During her final days, there was a steady stream of visitors coming by to tell her how she was loved. Many of the staff at Grace came by, some on their days off, to tell her how much she meant to them.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Susan and Larry Kelley, Mark and Jacque Rose, Tag Rose and James and Shannon Rose, eight grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and Freddie, her little Yorkie.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 31 at the Cottonwood Grille, 913 W. River Street. Please join us any time between 11AM and 2PM.
