Hazel was born on September 23, 1917 in rural Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Burton and Anna (Schmidt) Depew. Her mother died when Hazel was two years old and was then raised by her aunt and uncle, Henry and Amelia Schmidt of Tama. She received her education in the rural schools of Tama County. After school, she worked as a hired girl for various families in the community. On December 29, 1940, she was united in marriage to Warren Tomlinson at the St. John's Lutheran parsonage in rural Tama. The couple made their home farming south of Tama for twenty-seven years and later moved to Gilman in December 1967. Hazel was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama, where she was active in church circle and taught Sunday and Bible School. She also played piano for Sunday worship services and sang at many funerals. Hazel enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, baking, and helping her neighbors in various ways.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her aunt and uncle who raised her; her husband, Warren on February 9, 2004; one son, Bill in 2015; two sisters, Marie Shadden and Edna Ferneau; and two brothers, Glen Depew and Marvin Depew.
She is survived by five children, Gary (Marian) Tomlinson of Glen Ellyn, IL, Keith (Ginny) Tomlinson of Kaukauna, WI, Paul Tomlinson of Marshalltown, Dorothy Burgess of Prairie City, and Dave (Diane) Tomlinson of Urbandale; nineteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established.
