A housewife, Zoe (Patterson) Stephens lived her 65 years in Oregon except for the three months after her marriage when she resided in Seattle, Washington. She attended the Oregon public schools and graduated in 1922 from the University of Oregon High School in Eugene, Oregon. Not only did Zoe give birth to six children, but she earned money throughout her life at various short term jobs. She sold fancy work, canned fruit for the neighbors, cooked for a boys summer camp, sold vegetables from her half acre garden, delivered circulars and green sheets for the Eugene Daily News, picked beans for commerical growers, sold Spenser Corsets, and sewed costumes for the University Theatre. From Nov. 1941 on, Zoe suffered from a rare bleeding disease, Hereditary Thrombasthenic Purpura, diagnosed in 1953 by Dr. Edwin Osgood of the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland. After being in ill health for approximately 25 years, Zoe passed away on 27 July 1968, at the Portland Sanitarium and Hospital, but she did live to attend the wedding on 6 July 1968, of her eldest grandson John Lawerance Brown.
