Second Lieutenant Mayhood served with the 439th Bomb Squad, 319th Bomb Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

Killed in service, when his medium twin engine bomber, B-26B Marauder #41-17736 was involved in a mid air collision with another B-26 while training, in the skies near Harding Field, north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The two planes crashed into a wooded area, north of Zion City. A detached wing from one of the bombers landed in the backyard of a residence, missing the house by thirty feet.

Son of Ray H. and Iliff Purcell Mayhood.

The air crew killed aboard Bill's B-26 were:
