James was born and raised in Matador. He graduated from Matador High School. He moved to Amarillo in 1971. James worked for Truckstops of America for several years. He worked for Highland Park ISD for 11 years. He was currently employed with Mueller for the last 8 years.
James loved fishing and playing pool. He was an avid fan of jazz music. He was a member of Prayer Temple Church of God in Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Ernest Richardson, Johnny Nelms, and Stanley Nelms; and 1 sister, Doris Rivers.
Survivors include his wife of many years, Glenda Nelms; 1 son, Aubrey and 1 daughter, Misty, both of Amarillo; 2 brothers, Robert Nelms of Inglewood, CA, and Hurbert Thompson of Amarillo; 3 sisters, Patricia Anderson, Eileen Johnson and husband Larry, both of Amarillo, and Sally Mae Peters of Snyder; 5 grandchildren, Tristen, Zaydie, Jaaron, Garrett, and Raylee; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Nelms; and a host of nieces and nephews.
