Ken and his family went missing on December 7, 1958 after leaving their home to go cut Christmas greenery near the Columbia Gorge. His wife, Barbara, and daughters, Barbie, Virginia, and Susan, are believed to have drowned in the Columbia River after their car was accidentally driven into the river or was pushed in due to foul play. One-way tracks matching their car were found leading off a cliff above the river.

The only surviving member of the family was their oldest son, Donald, who was in the Navy and stationed in New York at the time.
