Hattiesburg

Laura McWhite Shook, 90, passed away following an extended illness on August 23, 2016. Laura had been a resident of Hattiesburg for seven years at Wesley Manor Methodist Retirement Home and had wonderful friendships there. She lived at Bedford Care Center for the past few years. She resided in Jackson and Pearl, MS, since 1964, and in Greenville, SC.

A memorial service will be held at Parkway Heights Methodist Church, Hattiesburg, Mississippi at 10 a.m., on Friday, August 26. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m., at Moore Funeral Home, Hattiesburg, and at the church prior to the service at 9 a.m. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Pearl at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 4111 Hwy 80 East, Jackson, MS, 39208.

Laura was born on July 3, 1926, in West Gantt Community of Greenville, South Carolina, to Bertie Myers McWhite and Arthur Tillman McWhite. After serving in J.P. Stevens Dunean Mill in Greenville, she found her talent in sales for Stanley Home Products as a Branch Manager and Unit Manager for over 50 years, first in South Carolina, and later in Mississippi. Her calling was loving people and making each feel valued and important. She loved her family and friends, never missing an opportunity to socialize, as long as health permitted. She was active in Alta Woods Methodist Church in Jackson, and was founder and charter member of the Sixty Plus Club. She organized trips for the seniors, and enjoyed her role as planner and tour guide.

In Hattiesburg, Laura was active in Wesley Manor activities, and Parkway Heights Methodist Church, Wesley Club and her Sunday School Class. Her Christian faith was demonstrated in outreach to new residents of the home, and participation in choir activities, Bible studies, dramas, and other fun activities there.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, Paul Wesley Shook, a sister, brother, and her son, Charles Wesley Shook.

Survivors are a sister, Dorothy McWhite Babb, of Greenville, SC, three daughters, Norma Shook Grahl, of Bogart, GA, Nancy Shook Hargrove (Hayward), of Black Mountain, NC, and Anita Shook Johnson (David), of Hattiesburg.
