Eugene E. Edwards
age 95, died Thursday, April 28, following a short illness.
Services will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 11a.m. at Cornerstone Community Church, 18600 Davis Rd., Dalton, Ohio 45618, with the Rev. Timothy Hull officiating. Burial will be at Dalton Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, Ohio, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born on July 16, 1920, in East Greenville as the only child to Clyde and Loda (Utsler) Edwards. He graduated from Washington High School and The Massillon Commercial Institute of Business. An army veteran of WWII serving from 1944 to 1946, he was a Private First Class in the 15th Army, 707 Tank Battalion in General George Patton's 3rd Army Replacement Depot. He crossed the Atlantic on Dec 26, 1944 and landed Jan. 9, 1945 at Le Havre, France. He served in several places in Belgium and France, where he lost his left eye, but finished his tour of duty before returning to the U.S.A.
He married Verna Weimer on March 11, 1948. She preceded him in death, Feb. 21, 1997. They lived in Dalton most of their lives, then moved to Orrville in 1993. He worked as a Sterling Bakery Driver for years, and retired as an agent of John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1982. A faithful member of Cornerstone Community Church, he was also a member of the V.F.W., D.A.V., Cedar Lodge #430, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton 32 Degree, a member and past President of the Dalton Rotary Club.
Surviving is his lady friend of 17 years and loving person to the entire family, Nellie Mills. Surviving relatives are daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Mike Marthey of Wooster; daughter, Bonnie Tengler of Dalton; son, Jim Edwards of Doylestown; daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Charlie Boggs of Orrville; grandchildren, Tim and Sharon Buren, Jeff and Karen Buren, Mike Wolgamatt, Michelle Mayo, Brett and Trish Simmers, Bjorn and Beth Boggs, Brianne and Adam Drinkard, Garrett Banks, and Shelby Edwards; 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Clark Weimer.
