Paul was the son of the late Pauline and Darrel Cantrell. He was a retired E-8, Senior Master Sergeant from the West Virginia Air National Guard, where he had served as an aircraft maintenance supervisor for the 130th Airlift Wing. He served with distinction throughout his career, including his deployment to Southwest Asia during Desert Storm. He was on the Board of Directors for the West Virginia Military Retirees Association and was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School.
