Dorotha was born into a large farming community. She grew up in a loving family environment. Her chores included milking cows and making hay. She played piano by ear, and could read sheet music well enough to promote it for sale at the store.

She nearly died from scarlet fever in her teens, which she contracted from eating fruit at Krogers, where she worked at the time, but later graduated from Zanesfield High School class of 1929. She raised four (grateful) daughters, Lois Ann, Betty Lou, Patricia Jean, & Connie Sue, with her husband of sixty-four years, Glade, and was widely respected for her needlecraft and crocheting skills.

Dorotha was also noted for her green thumb, a kind heart, and a beautiful smile.
