Suzanne Kibler Morris
1922-2016
Born July 1, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio, Susie died peacefully at the age of 94 on August 18, 2016, surrounded by family in her home and garden. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 60 years, Seth Irwin Morris Jr., and her sister, Barbara Dillingham.
Survivors include her son, Peter Morris and wife Fan of Houston; daughter Maria Morris Hambourg Barlow and husband Witt of Providence; son David Morris and wife Anne Lewis of Houston; daughter Laura Walls and husband Rob of San Antonio; and son John Morris and wife Suzannah of Houston; and by 14 grandchildren: Sarah MacDonald, Elizabeth Morris and Alison Skelton; Duke, Elliot, Meade, Sam and Suze Barlow; Henry Morris; Emily, Robby and John David Walls; Ellen and Samuel Morris, and 6 great grandchildren, all of whom she showered with love. Susie is also survived by the children of her late sister Barbara Kibler Dillingham and their families as well as by the children and families of her husband's sister, Mary Beth Peters.
Susie was the daughter of Corinne Houk and George Edward Kibler, a farmer from Indiana who built a sizable business of men's clothing stores throughout the Midwest. Graduating from Wellesley College in 1944 having acquired expertise in art history and New York jazz clubs, she fell in love with a man she met at her sister Barbara's home in wartime Washington, D.C. Fascinated by the idea of a "self-made man", she sensed that this man would make something of himself, so she bucked her parents' wishes to "follow the fellow who follows a dream," as the song went. She married Lt. Seth Irwin Morris, Jr. after the war ended in 1945. An architect who graduated from Rice Institute ('35), SI built her a modern house next door to sister Barbara and the Kibler girls raised their families side by side in the burgeoning Houston of mid-century, a wide-open city of opportunity that embraced the civic-minded couple.
A vivacious hostess and excellent chef, Susie's inclusive, genuinely kind, and accepting nature drew friends from all quarters. She loved people and she loved life, and her appreciative, positive attitude was magnetic. By 1970, when the last of her children entered school, Susie devoted herself more fully to her favorite causes. She generously gave her time to local hospitals and schools and served on the boards of various cultural and civic institutions, including the Junior League, Houston Symphony, Museum of Fine Arts, Planned Parenthood, and the Garden Club of Houston. She was especially devoted to her alma mater, Wellesley College, where she served as a trustee for many years, heading the committee responsible for the design and construction of the Davis Art Museum. Through this service she realized the promise Wellesley had kindled in her youth, and brought together her belief in service and her love of art and architecture.
The Suzanne Kibler Morris '44 Internship in Global Flora was recently established at Wellesley, honoring her passion for education, art, gardens, and horticulture. In addition, the SI and Susie Morris Lounge at the Rice University School of Architecture will be dedicated next week.
The family is deeply grateful for the longtime service and devotion of Rocio Gutierrez and Marty Moore, and for the loving care of Elizabeth Dillingham and the kind caregivers from Houston Hospice toward the end. A celebration of Susie's life will be held at 1 PM on Friday, August 26, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a loyal congregant for over 40 years. For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Garden Club of Houston, the SI and Suzanne Morris Photography Endowment at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Wellesley College, or a charity of your choice .
