Darlene Ruth (Oldt) Mitchell, 69, of Middleburg, passed away at 3:42 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at her home with her husband and daughter by her side.
She was born June 25, 1947, a daughter of the late Charles and Ola Oldt. On June 25, 1964, she married Clifford E. Mitchell who survives.
Darlene was employed by Midd-West School District retiring after 30 years of service. She worked in the high school cafeteria where she met and got to know many of the students and teachers. To this day, many former students remember her from school. After retiring she began working at the Middleburg Auction on Tuesdays at the snack bar with her daughter and son-in-laws parents where they enjoyed many moments of fun and laughter.
Darlene was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek and a member of the Women's Guild. She spent many years actively involved in vacation Bible school, Sunday school, and many fundraisers including the delicious ham dinners. She read the scriptures every morning and devoted her life to live by them.
She was always there when someone needed help whether it be a homecooked meal or just someone to talk to. She always said no matter how little you had there was always someone worse off than you and you needed to help however you could. And she always did. By her selfless acts of kindness, she has inspired her daughter and many others whose lives she has touched. Their house was always a favorite handout spot for her daughter's friends. She spent many years cooking meals and having get-togethers for the neighborhood kids. Her love and caring knew no bounds. Whether you know her as "mom", "nene", "the lunch lady" or Darlene, you knew that she was special and felt honored to have her in your life.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Valerie J. and Todd J. Hollenbach, of Middleburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Clarence Stoneroad, of Middleburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Dianna Keister, of Middleburg; sister-in-law, Trena Moyer; brother-in-law, Noble Moyer; two nieces; one nephew; five great-nieces; one great-nephew; one great-great-niece and nephew; and her cat, Molly.
At Darlene's request, there will be no viewing. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, with Pastor Amelia A. Price officiating.
Burial will be in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Middleburg.
Contributions to honor Darlene's memory may be made to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
