He married Kate Elizabeth Byers at Point Pleasant, WV, on 30 Nov 1868. She was the daughter of John A. and Charlotte Mary (Davis) Byers. Horace graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1867, preparing him for service in the Protestant Episcopal Church. He entered the Howard County Calvary of the Confederate Army on 1 June 1861 when the Civil War began and served until August 1862 when he was put in charge of the wounded at Buckland, VA.
