Olympic Gold Medalist. He was a slalom canoeist who won the gold medal in the K-1 event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1971 he won the gold medal in the K-1 event and a silver for the the team event at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships . He would capture the gold medal the next year at the Munich Summer Olympics in the K-1. At the world championship level, he would go on to earn two more gold medals (1973 K-1 team, 1975 K-1), one silver (1973 K-1), and one bronze (1975 K-1 team). After retiring from the sport, he became a teacher at the University of Leipzig. He passed away after a bout with cancer.
