Ernestine (Ernie) Lee – also known as GG and Gram – passed away peacefully in her home on August 21, 2016, just short of her 100th birthday, surrounded by her family. She was known for her amazing spirit and referring to her advancing age as, “just a couple of numbers”. She will be deeply missed by so many who love and cherish her.
Ernie was born October 18, 1916 to Isadore and Pauline Olshen in New York City, where she was raised and educated. She came to Chico in 1942 and worked as the office manager for the Chico Record (now the Enterprise Record) until 1949. She and her husband, Milton Lee, built, owned and operated the Studio Inn Motel and Bar until 1966. Ernie then went to work for Enloe Hospital, serving as the personnel assistant – calculating and handwriting payroll checks for the entire staff – until her retirement in 1981. Years after Milt’s death, she gained a longtime companion in her then-neighbor, Bill Murray. They traveled the world and spent many summers together at Lake Almanor before his death. The years of companionship Bill and Ernie shared brought an incredible amount of love and joy to both their lives.
She was a member of Chico Josephine Chapter #104, Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Enloe Auxiliary. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, serving in many capacities over the years, lastly as the “Senior Advisor” to the Fun-Timers group until she passed on. Her church family was a tremendously important part of her daily life.
Her greatest passion was for her family. Her happiest moments were spent with her family around her table, celebrating holidays and milestones. She was fiercely independent, yet cherished her relationships with family and friends beyond all measure. She always had a cappuccino and cookies ready for anyone who stopped by.
She leaves behind her son, Edward Lannert (Joyce) of New York; daughter, Barbara Kloth (Kenny) of Sandy, Utah; Carole Mickelson (Les Doll) of Chico, ten grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Her husband, Milton Lee; her two sisters; Bertie Cowden of Maryland and Micki Hecht of New York, and her youngest daughter, Linda Whipple (Robert) of Covelo, preceded her in death.
A memorial service for Ernestine Lee, will be held on what would have been her 100th birthday, October 18, 2016 at 11:00 am at the First Christian Church, with graveside services and a reception to immediately follow.
