Eileen (Pyle) Coit, 88
FALMOUTH- Eileen Pyle Coit, 88, died peacefully on Nov. 23, 2007, in her residence at Falmouth, Ocean View at Falmouth in Falmouth.

Born in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 9, 1919, she was the eldest of five children of Dr. Edwin and Mrs. Annette Pyle. She graduated from Chateham Hall School, Chatham, Va. On August 23, 1941, she married Charles A. Coit, who predeceased her in 1999. Her two brothers Edwin Pyle, Jr., and Dr. Hugh Pyle, also predeceased her.

She will be remembered most by her grateful family for the many ways she demonstrated her unconditional love. She was a superb gourmet cook with few peers, and she enjoyed bestowing her love upon her family and friends through her innumerable culinary creations.

She was unequivocal and uncompromising in her convictions, providing a foundation of beliefs from which her family took great strength. Experiences that most exemplified her sense of adventure and willingness to stretch her horizons beyond convention were the year long family trip to live in Montpelier, France, in 1960, and many summers of family cruising aboard the family's 43 foot schooner White Wing. She fearlessly pursued her passions, demonstrating her zest for life and adventure. In 1938, when traveling as a student in Europe, she entered Austria just days before the Nazi invasion. While in her 60's, she signed aboard as cook on a stormy North Atlantic sailing voyage, surviving and supporting an all male crew.

She had a lifelong love of Blue Hill, Maine, where she spent nearly every summer of her youth and her adult life. She was an enthusiastic tennis player, and in more recent years became an avid reader. She remained interested in the world of ideas throughout her long and rich life, and she was always eager to engage in an exchange of views with anyone she encountered. She readily extended her enthusiasm for life and her empathy for those around including the Visiting Children's Hospital, the Women's Exchange and the Multiple Sclerosis Society, all of Portland. She volunteered at the Waterbury Hospital in Connection during World War II and subsequently at Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and at the Brunswick Regional Hospital. She was an Ingraham Hotline volunteer, and she also headed fundraising drives for Cancer Appeal and Planned Parenthood from the 1950s through the 1970s in Connecticut.

She is survived by her sisters Nancy Butler and Julie Nicholson, both of Cambridge, Mass. She is also survived by her four adoring children, Charles Kim Coit and wife Diane of South Portland, David M. Coit and wife, Margaret of Cape Elizabeth, Dr. Daniel G. Coit and wife Kate of New York City, Anne C. Williams and husband, Jack of Rockport; nine grandchildren, Ethan, Samantha, Julia, Lindsey, Charlie, John, David, Caroline and Winsor; two great grandsons Bodhi and Frederick.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec.9th, at St. Mary's Church, Route 88, Falmouth. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Avenue, Portland. Donations in memory of Eileen Pyle Coit may be made to: The Activities Director, Falmouth House, Ocean View at Falmouth, 32 Blueberry Lane, Falmouth, Maine, 04105.
