Catherine's parents were Thomas Cooney and Catherine Slattery, who did not leave Ireland.
Catherine Cooney was a twin with her sister Margaret. There were other siblings: John born 1827; James a possible brother, record not found; Patrick's record not found; Thomas born 1831.
All the children whose records were found, except for Thomas, were baptized at Powerstown Church outside of Clonmel, Tipperary. Thomas born 1831 was baptized at a nearby church, St. Mary's in Clonmel.
It was thought for some time that Catherine met her future husband while on board the ship Marcia C. Day which arrived in New York harbor in May 1857. However, it turns out that they were from the same parish in Tipperary on the border with Co. Waterford.
Catherine Cooney and her husband had one more child than the ones shown here. The burial place of their first child Thomas born late 1859, who may have died as an infant or young child, has not been located yet. He was probably buried in a cemetery in downtown St. Louis which was later moved.
