Michael Butler was a "poor plough-boy" in his early years in Ireland. He was probably the son of Patrick Butler and Mary McGrath Butler from Clonmel, Tipperary.

There were 4 other sons in the family: Thomas born 1825; John 1826; Michael (the first one by that name who probably died) born 1828; Michael born 1830; and Patrick born about 1835. The sons were all baptized at Powerstown Church outside of Clonmel, Tipperary.

Michael left Ireland in 1857, and met his future wife Catherine Cooney when they traveled on the ship Marcia C. Day, which arrived in New York harbor in May 1857.

Michael and Catherine married in November 1858 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Their first child was named Thomas, born in late 1859 or early 1860. Young Tom did not survive childhood apparently and his burial place has not been located.

Michael worked as a blacksmith and he farmed his large property a few miles east of this church in Manchester, Mo.
