GROCER DIES
47 year old man found dead in bed. Operated store on Beach St. here.
J. Clair Snell of 5 West Third St., borough grocer for the past 18 years and a man who seemed to be in the best of health, died in his sleep yesterday morning of a heart attack. He was 47.
Death came while his wife, Mrs. Rosalie Parrish Snell, was on a visit to her mother's home in Lorain, Ohio. Mrs. Snell, who left for Ohio the past Wednesday, was in route to Pottstown last night.
Mr. Snell had gone to a physician the past week for one of the few physical check-ups of his adult life. He was pronounced in good health.
Monday night, he had worked until 11 o'clock at his grocery store at 419 Beech St.
When the store was opened yesterday morning at about 8 o'clock, his absence was noticed immediately by his brother, S. Bertolette Snell, 259 Walnut St., who had assisted him in the business since it started.
The brother waited until about 9 o'clock believing that Mr. Snell had for once overslept. Then he sent a niece, Mrs. Morrell Grigg, 431 King St. to the home. Since his wife was in Ohio and his two daughters at college, no one answered her knock. Mrs. Grigg obtained a key and entered, finding her uncle dead in bed.
Mr. Snell was a lifelong resident of Pottstown and a son of the late Sanuel K and Annie M. (Bertolette) Snell.
A graduate of the 1919 class of Pottstown Senior High School, Mr Snell was a bookkeeper for a few years before opening his first grocer, Snell's Service Store, at 115 North Washington St. More than 10 years ago he moved his store to its present address.
Although, his family said, he had devoted most of his time to his store and home, he was a member of First Methodist Church; Stichter Lodge 254 and Pottstown Royal Arch, F and AM and Empire Hook and Ladder Co.
Surviving are his wife, Rosalie (Parrish) Snell and two daughters, Barbara Ann Snell, a student at Hope College, Holland, Michigan and Phyllis Jane Snell, a student at David and Elkins College, Elkins, W. Va. Also surviving are his brother, S. Bertolette Snell and four sisters, Eva, wife of Harry W. Conrad, 259 Walnut St.; Mrs. May Grubb, 431 King St.; Mrs. Elsie B. Shafer, 1209 North Charlotte St. and Thelma, wifr of J. Russel Yocum, Westfield, N.J.
Funeral arrangements, incomplete last night, are in charge of a funeral home at 359 King St.
