Joyce was born on January 22, 1929 to Frank and Mabel (Knutson) Sommerfeld in Lafayette, Wisconsin. She graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1947.
Joyce married Edward Nielsen on February 26, 1949 in Rantoul, Illinois. Together they raised two children and resided in Fall Creek. She was an active member of St. James Trinity Lutheran Church in Fall Creek.
Joyce worked at Fall Creek Mutual for many years.
She thoroughly enjoyed her Fall Creek coffee group where lots of gossip was shared. Joyce was a very driven, compassionate, and strong “little lady” and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Joyce is survived by her son, Thomas (Joanne) Nielsen of Phillips, WI; daughter, Jean Nielsen of Eau Claire; granddaughters, Melinda Nielsen of Beaver Dam, WI, Ashley (Don) Beck of Eau Claire, Leanne (J.B.) Grangaard of Strum, WI, and Lindsey (Joshua) Krueger of Cottage Grove, MN; great-grandchildren KayLee and Tristan Beck, Lucas and Mya Grangaard, and Eli and Brynn Krueger; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Nielsen; sisters, Marge (Roland) Mondeau and Bonita (Donald) Melville; and brother, Norman Sommerfeld.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016 at 11:00 am at Smith Funeral Chapel. Visitation will take place on Monday, August 22nd, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at Prairie View Cemetery in Chippewa Falls, WI.
