Nils Paeter was born May 8, 1848 in a quaint village called Ulvik on the banks of the beautiful fjord in Hardangerfjord, Norway.

N.P. was the sixth child born of Per Knutson Bryn of Voss and Sigri Jorgensdtr Reisaeter, daughter of Per Vossen. He went to the village school in Ulvik. He met a classmate, Anna Maria Gjertsdtr Lindebrekk. On April 11, 1867, the two, just 20 years old, were married. The next day, April 12, the couple set sail for America. They settled first in Vermillion, SD where they resided for a couple years until the birth of their first child, Sigrid. In the fall of 1875, they came to the Puget Sound and the following spring came to Stanwood WA, where he rented a farm.

Eleven children were born to the couple and other children were sent from Norway to be raised by him who acted as their foster father. These children were: Peter Leque, Sigrid Leque and Louie Smith. Six of their eleven children matured to adulthood. They retired in 1911 and moved to Bellingham WA. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 11, 1918.

They moved to Tacoma WA where he passed away on March 27, 1927 and she on March 12, 1923. They were remembered for their tender care and christian influence.

"About this time (1870). O. B. Iverson, who had suffered farming reverses from hail storms in Iowa and a grasshopper plague in South Dakota, made a scouting trip to the Stillaguamish. He was so impressed that he returned to South Dakota and induced friends to come west with him. In 1875 Nils Eide, N. B. Leque, A. Danielson and Iverson arrived together in a large Indian canoe. They bought the land that now comprises Leque Island, diked it, farmed it and the nucleus of the Scandinavian community here was formed."
