Mary Read Cameron was a child of Reverend John Cameron and his wife Anne Owen Nash Cameron. The year 1774 given as the year of her birth is an estimate. Her parents, John Cameron and Anne Owen Nash Cameron were married in 1773. Her 1844 obituary states that she was in her seventy-first year, which appears to mean that she was over seventy years old when she died on June 19, 1844. Thus, she was likely born in 1774.

Mary Read Cameron married Daniel Anderson in Virginia in 1797. She apparently was the second wife of Daniel Anderson, given that he was twenty-six years older than Mary when they married in 1797. One source calls her his second wife. See page 93 of “The Reads and their Relatives : Being an Account of Colonel Clement and Madam Read of Bushy Forest, Lunenburg County, Virginia, their Eight Children, their Descendants, and Allied Families” by Alice Read (Mrs. Shelley Rouse) (1930).

Mary Read Anderson had five children by her marriage to Daniel Anderson. They were William Cameron Anderson (1798-1799); Duncan Cameron Anderson (1799-1800); Walker Anderson (1801-1857); Cameron Anderson (1803-1803); and William Edward Anderson (1805-1852).

The obituary of Mary Read Cameron Anderson is found in the July 4, 1844 issue of the Hillsborough Recorder newspaper of Hillsborough, Orange County, N.C.

That obituary states:

“Died, in Wilmington, on Wednesday the 19th ultimo, at the residence of her son Col. Wm. E. Anderson, in the 71st year of her age, Mrs. Mary R. Anderson, formerly of Petersburg, but for many years a resident of this town. She was a humble christian, greatly loved and venerated by all who knew her.”

The text of the 1844 obituary of Mrs. Mary Read Cameron Anderson as published in the Hillsborough Recorder newspaper comes from "Marriage and Death Notices from The Hillsborough Recorder, Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina, Volume 2, 1837-1845" compiled by Barry Munson.

Current research locates Mary Read Cameron Anderson’s final resting place as an unmarked grave in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, New Hanover County, N.C. She died in Wilmington. It is believed that she was initially buried at the Hermitage plantation in New Hanover County, since Oakdale Cemetery was not chartered until December 27, 1852, according to the Oakdale Cemetery website.

The Hermitage was a likely initial burial place since it was the home of George W. B. Burgwin and his wife Maria Nash Burgwin and was the childhood home of Frances Eliza Bush Burgwin Anderson, Mary’s daughter-in-law by reason of her marriage to Mary's son William Edward Anderson.

An additional reason to believe Mary Read Cameron Anderson was initially buried at the Hermitage is the fact that Mary Cameron Anderson was related to Maria Nash Burgwin of the Hermitage. Mary’s mother was Anne Owen Nash Cameron (born 1753), and her grandfather was Thomas Nash (born circa 1730). Maria Burgwin’s father was Abner Nash (born 1740). Thomas Nash and Abner Nash were brothers, making Mary Cameron Anderson and Maria Nash Burgwin first cousins, once removed. Source regarding Nash family: Pages 83 and 84 of “The Reads and their Relatives - Being an Account of Colonel Clement and Madam Read of Bushy Forest, Lunenburg County, Virginia, their Eight Children, their Descendants, and Allied Families” by Alice Read (Mrs. Shelley Rouse) (1930). The NCPedia article for Abner Nash also mentions that one of his brothers was Thomas Nash and that Maria Nash Burgwin was his daughter.

In 1872 the remains of a number of members of the Burgwin family were removed from the cemetery at the Hermitage and moved to Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington. These reinterred remains included George Burgwin, his wife Maria Nash Burgwin, their son, Captain John Henry King Burgwin and “three other Burgwin family members.” Sources: Oakdale burial database (listing George Burgwin and wife and three unidentified Burgwin family members in Section H, Lot 89) and “Inscriptions” Newsletter, article: Captain J.H.K.Burgwin published by Friends of Oakdale Cemetery, Inc., Volume 8, No. 1, Spring, 2012. http://www.oakdalecemetery.org/docs/Inscriptions-Spring-2012.pdf
