He was born on May 11, 1930 in Clark County, OH, the son of the late Raymond E. and Stella (Cartmell) Coon. James was a general contractor with R.E. Coon & Sons, Director of Grounds and Maintenance for Urbana City Schools and later served as an Urbana Township Trustee. He was a member of the Masonic Temple Harmony Lodge No. 8 and the Urbana Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margit (Pinelli) Coon; sons, Marty (Laura) Hess and Bruce Coon (Steve Page); daughter, Deborah Kay Mefford; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and brother, Donald (Sharon) Coon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond F. Coon, Thomas Coon and Billy Coon; and sister, Edna (Coon) Dresen.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2016 in the WALTER & STOWE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, with a Masonic service at 7:45 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016 in the funeral home with Pastor Dwight Pullins officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Urbana.
