Thomas Andrew Deats

T. A. Deats, a prominent merchant and pioneer cowman of Albany, passed away at his home in Albany surrounded by his relatives and friends, whose grief is shared by the entire citizenship of the town.

Mr. Deeats was one of those lovable characters, whose lives are lived unobtrusively, for the service of others. his honesty, integrity and gentle spirit endeared him to all, and especially to the children of the town, whose fondness for the noble man was noticeable wherever he went.

He was born in Bastrop County on June 10, 1855, going with his family to Llano and later to Austin, where he received his education, In 1879 he came to West Texas and engaged in the cattle business and in 1884 married in Colorado City, Texas, to Miss Annie Elkins.

In 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Deats moved to Albany and in 1914 he retired from the cattle business and entered the furniture and saddlery business, the latter of which engaged him until his death.

On June 10, Mr. and Mrs. Deats celebrated their golden wedding anniversary where they received the congratulations from their many friends and relatives. It is a singular fact that in all these years this worthy couple was only apart for as much as three weeks, at one time only.

Funeral service held at the United Methodist Church. The body was laid to rest in the Albany Cemetery beside that of his son, Bob Deats, a World War Veteran, who died in 1919. The many floral offerings that covered both graves, were a tribute to the love and respect that his many friends here, and in other towns bore him.
