MAURICE BROOKS OBITUARY
Maurice "Bill" J. Brooks passed away at his home on October 29, 2014, at age 96. Bill was born to Maurice J. and Annie Riddle on December 11, 1917, and was the grandson of Bellingham's contractor Jasper and Effie Riddle, who left the Riddle name stamped on many Bellingham sidewalks. Bill was a life-time resident of Bellingham and a graduate of Whatcom High School in 1936.

After graduation Bill was an auto mechanic until he was drafted into the Army for service in World War 2 in the 41st Infantry Division. Bill was stationed in Australia, New Guiena and Philippines for over four years. Upon his return to the States he returned as auto mechanic at Buford Davis Automotive and Harvey Kennedy Automotive before joining the City of Bellingham Automotive Department. To Bill's delight, the City group nicknamed Bill "The Whistler" and "Bird Man", which they say represented his bird-like sounds and cheerful chirping.

Bill married Kathryn O'Brien, having three children Lee, Jeff, and Kelli. Bill and Irene Williams were married happily for over 37 years prior to her passing in 2002. Bill was active for many years in the Bellingham Sportsmen's Club, and inspired many a child in the art of fishing for their annual derby at Whatcom Falls Park, as well as coaching new competitors in the proper use of rifles and pistols. Bill was also a life member of the Bellingham Rifle and Pistol Club, the NRA, and Elks Club Lodge 194. Bill was honored with a tremendous amount of awards as a champion marksman from the Bellingham Rifle Club. His crowning competition achievement was to win the Senior State Championships of Washington and Idaho in his last year of competition.

Bill turned to bowling during the off season and competed until beyond age 93, with a high score of 252. Bill and Irene traveled throughout the country after his retirement. They toured extensively the northern and southern U.S., Canada, and journeyed to Australia to visit friends he had made during the war. Their travels fishing in Washington and Canada were a special pleasure; for over 35 years they spent many a day at Lake Sheridan catching the "big" ones, and surrounded with all of their family trainees. Bill also loved to hunt with all his friends and family in Eastern Washington, hiking with the younger generation in the mountains of Western Washington, and his best friend Dean Adkinson on countless adventures. Many tales were spun around Bill being the "senior" hunter who could hike up the mountains much faster than any of his peers and most of the youngster generation.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Irene of 37 years, parents Maurice and Annie, sister Marian Brooks-Caufman, and several Aunts and Uncles. Bill's family includes Lee Brooks of Friday Harbor, WA, Jeff (Jodi) Brooks of Selah, Kelli (Dave) Mannon of Bow, grandchildren Richard (Mikki) Brooks, Hilo, HI, Angela Brooks-Scott of Seattle, WA, Greg Brooks of Anacortes, WA, Chad (Jenni) Stahlecker of Mount Vernon, WA, Pamela (Mat) Ballenger of Bow, WA, and Shaun Mannon of Sedro Woolley, WA, niece Susan (Del) Stremler of Bellingham, nephew Bernie (Mimi) Caufman of Arlington, and cousin Millard (Donna) Brooks of Bellingham. Bill also had six great grandchildren: Alysha Ward, Daryl Scott Jr., Jackson and Cooper Stahlecker, and Malaki and Makenna Ballenger, great nieces Jessica (John) Fricke with Brennan and Aiden, and Andrea (Ray) Goto with Ava.

Services are being held at Jerns Funeral Chapel at 800 East Sunset, Bellingham, WA, on Friday, November 7, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
