Rev. Floyd E. Hughes, age 77, of Kentwood, MI, went to be with his Lord Saturday, August 6, 2016. Floyd was born in Whelen Springs, AR, to James Hardy and Dovie Dee (Davis) Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wana; 5 children, Naomi (Sam) Younglove, Rhoda (Rev. Hardy) Smith, Yvonne (Rev. Scott) Hanson, Sarah (Derrick) DeMey and Gene (Michelle) Hughes, 22 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two siblings, Fanny Bee Ogle and Charles Hughes.

After graduating from Gurdon High School (AR) in 1956, Floyd served 4 years in the U.S. Navy. He obtained his Bachelors of Arts from Ouachita Baptist University (1964) while working as a sewing machine mechanic to support his family. Rev. Hughes received his Masters of Divinity in 1971 and went on to serve churches in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Michigan. In addition to pastoring, he served in various denominational capacities in the Southern Baptist Convention, including Trustee of the Sunday School Board and First Vice President of the Baptist State Convention of Michigan.

Rev. Hughes was preceded in death by both of his parents and 16 siblings. At the time of his death, he was a member of Woodward Baptist Church, Byron Center, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Woodward Baptist Church, 2160 76th Street SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. The family will receive visitors from 10:00-11:00AM. The service will begin at 11:00AM with lunch to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ministry of Woodward Baptist Church in Rev. Hughes’ memory.
