Lewis Burton Hooker
1937-2016
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on August 14th, 2016 peacefully in his home, surrounded by family. Lew was a caring, loving, spiritual man with a quirky sense of humor and big heart. He lived a full life, caring for his loving wife Geri, their three children, their twelve grandchildren, and their first great-granddaughter.
We will miss his improvised stories about whirly-winds or Mr. Big-Ant. We will miss his not-so-secret licorice stash which was always stocked for visitors. We will miss hearing cashiers, bank-tellers and salesmen around the city recognize him from afar and greet him as an old friend. We will miss watching him share more than half of his dinner plate with his favorite dog. We will miss his generosity, his love, and his prophetic counsel. We will miss him dearly.
Lew was born on November 20, 1937 in Pocatello, Idaho becoming the youngest in a small family of five. His parents Myrl and Elizabeth Hooker named him Lewey, a name he changed to Lewis during high school. He was raised in Montpelier, Idaho where he learned to dance and loved doing the jitterbug. He was especially gifted as a ballroom dancer-which would be instrumental one day in catching the eye of his sweetheart. Montpelier was great for dancing, but not so great for skiing. He would often tell people that since there was no lift, he wanted to make sure the ride down was worth the hike up, and he broke just about every bone he could.
His family was his greatest joy. During his growing up years, he spent a lot of time with his father fly-fishing. His love of family was fueled by the outdoors as he spent countless days waterskiing with his wife and kids. He spent years taking the family out boating, camping, and fishing. He loved his animals as he loved his family and friends-especially later in life when he was finally allowed to have his first dog. Never afraid to try new things, Lew tried his hand at painting, guitar, and harmonica-each quite successfully. His Saturday mornings were spent finding just the right treasure at local garage sales where the people he met were often his treasure.
He graduated in June of 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Brigham Young University where he met his eternal companion, Geraldine Whitmore, who he married on June 30, 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple. They just recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. His second love was also found during his schooling: he remained a stalwart Cougar fan throughout his life.
He spent his career as an owner/manager of tire businesses but always said he worked with people, not tires. His guidance and leadership inspired employees, superiors and customers for many years. He enjoyed working with the public and sacrificed countless hours to help others wherever he could.
Lew touched many hearts and lives as he served as Bishop and Stake President, and was serving as the Stake Patriarch when he passed away. He and his wife served a full-time mission in Warsaw, Poland from November 2003 to May 2005.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tom Hooker, and his sister Joyce Whitaker. He is survived by his wife Geri, daughter Christine Fowkes (Brett), son Curtis Hooker (Stephanie), daughter LuAnn Rodriguez (Phil), 12 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter.
The family wishes to thank the ICU staff at the Intermountain Medical Center and the countless others who served Lew and his entire family through this difficult time.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Midvale East 6th Ward LDS church located at 7250 S. 300 E. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. There will also be a viewing Friday evening, August 19, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary located at 10600 S. 1950 E. in Sandy.
