Family, friends and colleagues gathered at the corner of McLean and Jerome avenues in South Beach Saturday to rename the intersection "Loretta Quinn Way."
The late Loretta F. Quinn was a civic leader and a lifelong resident of South Beach.
She had served Community Board 2 as its youth services planning coordinator and worked at Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home to help establish the city's first health care museum.
She helped organize the annual Health Awareness Fair for seniors at Mount Loretto and was a founder of the Richmond County Golden K Kiwanis Club. She served as director of United Activities Unlimited, the Neponsit Health Care Center in Queens, and the Staten Island Continuum of Education. Ms. Quinn was also a pioneer of the Staten Island "Green Streets" initiative, which fostered community investment in parks.
Ms. Quinn served as special events coordinator for the New York City Council District 51, assisting former Council Members Steven Fiala and state Senator Andrew Lanza. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn appointed Loretta as interim administrator when Lanza was elected to the state Senate and vacated the Council seat.
Ms. Quinn collected packages for troops serving overseas and organized the annual Rose of Sharon Festival honoring veterans of the Korean War. She organized massive bus trips from Staten Island to the World War II monument in Washington, D.C. She advocated for 9-11 victims' families and was instrumental in coordinating commemorative street renamings on Staten Island in honor of residents who died in the attacks.
For her work on behalf of the Staten Island community, Council members James Oddo and Vincent Ignizio, as well as Lanza, orchestrated and supported the renaming of the South Beach corner.
Ms. Quinn, the mother of Edward Kane, Michael Kane and Robert Quinn, sister to Wayne and Barbara Nash, and grandmother of four, died in 2007, at the age of 67.
