Chemist, founder of home economics, early pioneer in nutrition, sanitation and public health. Applied and was admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1870, they waived her tuition because they did not want to have a female student on the official school roster. Richards later said "had I realized on what basis I was taken, I would not have gone." She was the first woman to recive a degree from MIT. She married Robert Hallowell Richards in 1875. They had no children.
